On Friday October 27, 2017, the Hammond Varsity Football team will travel across county lines to play Kent County High School. This game was originally supposed to be played against Centennial High School but due to their lack of a varsity team, Kent County was added.

When compared, the two teams are quite similar. Hammond has had a pretty rough season with a record of 0-8 and Kent County’s standings are currently 1-7. Both teams are also relatively small in size.

The Bear Press recently spoke to the captains and coaches of varsity football to gain some insight on their thoughts going into this game. Junior captain, Tayo Ojo, expressed his optimism about the upcoming game. “I feel great about going into this game, it’s an opportunity to show the county that we are not the same team from previous years even though we are playing an out of county team.” The Bears are preparing for Friday by looking over game footage, practicing, and focusing on the goal.

Senior Captain Guy Spring echoed Ojo’s optimism, and reinforced the rededication to football fundamentals that it will take to get a win on the board. “We have the potential to win however it would require people to focus and work harder,” Springer stated.

The Golden Bears have struggled to overcome injuries this season. Currently, junior Tre Smith is officially done for the season due to an arm injury and as for senior William Aung, he is looking forward to possibly playing for the rest of the season after returning from injury last week against Howard.
