For the 2024 Spring Production, Hammond Theatre brought Guys and Dolls to the stage, a production filled with big city gamblers and even bigger drama. The show brought in over 1,500 audience members over the course of the show’s three-day run from February 29th to March 2nd.
Hammond’s talented actors and stage crew converted the bright lights of New York City to the stage lights of the Hammond auditorium. The show follows two big city gamblers, Nathan Detroit and Sky Masterson, and their stories with the women they love. Nathan Detroit runs the largest floating craps game in the city and has been engaged to his Hot Box performing fiancée, Adelaide, for 14 years. While trying to find a safe location to hold the game Nathan makes a bet with Sky that he cannot take mission worker Sarah Brown to Havana. Sky and Sarah find themselves falling in love in Havana, while Adelaide continues her efforts to convince Nathan to finally marry her.
This show signified a farewell for the theatre department’s many seniors. Senior Alex Finger played Nathan Detroit, high-rolling gambler, and said, “I feel like it went really smoothly this year; everyone was pretty organized. It came together really well in the end, we all put our hearts into it and I think it was a great senior play.”
Hammond students not only starred on stage, they accompanied their fellow students’ acting with the soundtrack of the musical in the orchestra pit as well. Carsten Winslow, a senior member of the pit band, played french horn for the Guys and Dolls as well as, last year’s production of Beauty and the Beast. Carsten has enjoyed his time in the band pit saying, “I thought that pit was a very valuable musical experience. I really enjoyed playing the pieces that I did. It’s a very different experience from concert band or wind ensemble; it’s a blend of choir, band, and dance, so it was really cool.”
Love you a bushel and a peck, Hammond Theatre!
