The season is bright for Hammonds Wrestling team with many strong returners coming back. Some of the familiar faces are Seniors Will Terry and Cody Johnson who were both county champions last year. Heading into winter break the team stands at a 5-2 record, with more tournaments on the way. “One of my personal goals this season is to defend my individual county championship and win the state tournament,” said Will Terry.

Returning Junior Clara Freeman is extremely optimistic about this season saying “We are definitely top two in the county.” Freeman is wrestling at 126 this year and her personal goal is to be a state champion. Her goal for the team is “To repeat county champs and 7 county finalists”

This season comes with a big change for the program as the former longtime Head Coach has left and a new Coach, Greg Saumenig was hired. “I think our new coach fits our culture well and I think we will have success with him,” said Will Terry. Coach Greg has a fierce attitude and a hard work ethic mind set which will fit perfectly into the roots and culture of Hammonds Wrestling program.

“I want to beat Oakland Mills, we did it last year and I know we can do it this year,” said Clara Freeman. Oakland Mills is Hammonds rival team and beating them is a goal that the whole team wants to accomplish. Hammond won the face-off last year and the team is confident they can do it again.

The start of the season near an Hammonds Wrestling team has high hopes for this year’s season. With the addition of a new coach and lots of returning wrestlers this season will go down as one to remember.
