The Hammond Boys Lacrosse team had a season packed with many highs and lows. With a new coach and new players this season, the team had to rebuild their field and communication skills. Senior Matthew Lee was adamant that “consistency is key, […] we just need people out here striving to get better everyday.” He believes that the team improved with every practice, which could really be seen in the games that they played this season.
Building a good relationship with the team members is important to the Senior players on the team. Senior Captain Nick Hager believes that because of the intense environment while playing difficult games this season it was important that the team had good sportsmanship and communication. Building back up the basics was really beneficial to them winning.
Dedicated to bettering their communication and skills, their game against Meade Senior High School was a testament to this as the Golden Bears came out on top by a score of 11-5. Hager described it as “a very thrilling game” where they led the entire game. The offense and defense of the Golden Bears worked cohesively and fluidly together in order to gain an early lead, and maintain it throughout the duration of the game. The postgame feeling was a big motivator for the team for the remainder of the season, as they wanted to get another taste of victory. “It was really nice hearing the crowd cheer each time we scored or had a big stop, and with that energy, I felt it helped keep much needed momentum throughout the game” said Hager as he reflected on the winning contest.
With the season ending and the senior players reflecting on the season and their personal goals, many of them have said that they achieved what they wanted to do this season. As a strong part of the team were first year players, the Coaches were astounded by how fast the new players picked up the game and were able to improve their own skills.
