For captains Grace Haber and Ary Koroma, practicing with game-like intensity and laser focus are vital components for preparing for a game. The Hammond Lady Bears are looking to feed off their hot end to the 2023 season where they won the last 2 of 3 games. To make sure the girls are prepared before each game, captain Ary Koroma will try and instill confidence in her teammates saying, “ [Giving] motivational speeches before the game and stuff and like really have everyone locking in during their warm up and you know I try and do some personal talks to some people.”

When captain Grace Haber was asked about her expectations going into the season, she had this to say, “I expected us to have a good team chemistry because we had already played together the previous year and we only lost a couple of seniors, so I am hoping for a good season.”

The Lady Bears showed their strength when they took on a tough Oakland Mills team to double overtime. While the game ended in a draw, many players felt proud of their effort, though some wished they had been able to break through late in the game. Despite the draw, this game highlighted key players stepping up in crucial moments. Junior forward Alexis Wright led the charge with her aggressive runs up the field, while senior defender Grace Haber provided solid defense throughout both overtimes. Their contributions, along with the team’s collective strength, gave a glimpse of what could come later in the season.

With captains like Koroma and Haber leading the way, the Lady Bears are determined to push beyond their previous limits. As the season progresses, their sights are set on strong performances. For now, the focus remains on one game at a time, with an emphasis on preparation, unity, and determination.
