For Orioles fans, this offseason feels like a pretty important one. After entering 2026 with high expectations, they finished with a 79-82 record, missing the playoffs for the second straight year. Just a few seasons ago, the Orioles looked to be one of the most exciting young teams in baseball. Now, the question is what moves the front office will make to get this team back into playoff contention.
One of the biggest positives from this past season was first baseman Pete Alonso. After signing a five-year, $155 million contract last offseason, Alonso made an immediate impact, leading the American League with 43 home runs and 113 RBIs. His power gave the Orioles a dangerous hitter in the middle of the lineup. However, even with his production, the team struggled to win consistently. Baltimore needs more than a strong offense to compete in a very tough American League East.
What Should the Orioles Do?
Pitching undoubtedly needs to be the biggest priority this offseason. The Orioles need another reliable starting pitcher who can consistently go deep into games and compete against the best teams in baseball. Kyle Bradish gives Baltimore an important piece to build around, but adding another frontline starter could make a major difference. The bullpen also needs to improve, especially in close games where one mistake can decide the outcome of the whole game.
Offensively, Baltimore still has plenty of talent. Gunnar Henderson remains a key part of the team’s future, and Alonso provides power and experience. Instead of completely changing the lineup, the Orioles should focus on helping their younger hitters become more consistent. If the offense can produce while the pitching improves, this team has a much better chance of returning to the postseason.
What Could Happen This Offseason?
There are several directions Baltimore could take. The team could pursue a big-name starting pitcher in free agency or explore trades to bring in an established arm. Smaller moves to improve the bullpen and bench depth could also be important. The Orioles don’t necessarily need to make the biggest splash in baseball, but they need to address the weaknesses that hurt them this past season.
Another storyline is the team’s future behind the plate after trading Adley Rutschman at the deadline. Samuel Basalli could become an important part of the organization’s plans, but replacing an established player takes time. How the Orioles handle their young talent will be something worth watching throughout the winter.
What Are We Looking Forward To?
Despite the disappointing finish, there are reasons for Orioles fans to remain optimistic. The team still has talented young players, a powerful middle of the lineup, and an opportunity to improve through smart offseason decisions. Watching how the roster develops and which players step up next season should make for an interesting year.
Ultimately, Baltimore does not need to start over. It needs to make the right moves, improve its pitching, and find a way to win consistently. Orioles fans have waited to see this young core become a serious contender, and this offseason could help determine whether that happens. After another frustrating season, it is time for Baltimore to give its fans a reason to believe again.
